Nikko Toshogu
Toshogu Shrine (Tōshōgū) is a magnificent memorial to Tokugawa Ieyasu, the founder of the Tokugawa Shogunate, which ruled Japan for over 250 years until 1868. Ieyasu is enshrined at Toshogu as the deity Tosho Daigongen, "Great Deity of the East Shining Light". Initially a relatively simple mausoleum, Toshogu was enlarged into the spectacular complex seen today by Ieyasu's grandson Iemitsu during the first half of the 17th century.
The lavishly decorated shrine complex consists of more than a dozen buildings set in a beautiful forest. Countless wood carvings and large amounts of gold leaf were used to decorate the buildings in a way not seen elsewhere in Japan, where simplicity has been traditionally stressed in shrine architecture.
Visitors may note that Toshogu contains both Shinto and Buddhist elements. It was common for places of worship to contain elements of both religions until the Meiji Period when Shinto was deliberately separated from Buddhism. Across the country, Buddhist elements were removed from shrines and vice versa, but at Toshogu the two religions were so intermingled that the separation was not carried out completely.

“Exceptional service – above and beyond!”
We had the most amazing experience with this agency. From the very start, they were incredibly responsive, patient, and thoughtful in helping us plan our trip. Traveling with elderly parents and young children can be a logistical challenge, but they handled every detail with care and professionalism. What truly stood out was how they went above and beyond—adjusting our itinerary multiple times without hesitation, accommodating special requests, and even providing helpful tips during the trip itself. The driver assigned to us was friendly, punctual, and genuinely invested in making our experience memorable. This level of service is rare, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them to anyone looking for a worry-free, well-organized, and warm-hearted travel experience. Thank you for making our family trip so special SoQ!

“Life savers”
I called last minute for a ride from Minakami to Yamanashi for me, my wife, and our 3 kids and they delivered a driver who arrived right on time, spoke perfect English, was super friendly, and stopped at a few restaurants stops with incredible food options. The van was very nicely appointed and he got us to our destination safely. I would definitely use them again.
