Akihabara as a destination for manga, anime, and game enthusiasts

Akihabara is now known as a home to the anime subculture in Tokyo. Everything related to anime can be found in Akihabara including anime specialty shops, manga and light novel book stores, specialty game shops, maid cafés, random street cosplayers, big anime billboards, and a lot more. Akihabara is sometimes called "Akiba" as a shorter term, especially by youngsters.

A little bit of history

Akihabara, prior to being known as the anime capital of Japan, was once a famous district for electronic needs. It was once known as Akihabara Electric Town where you can shop for all kinds of electronic appliances, gadgets, and parts for relatively lower prices. You can also avail repair services on various household electronic items such as radios, television, computers, and the like.

Manga, anime, and game attractions in Akihabara

GUNDAM Café

The GUNDAM café is a must-go destination for all long time Gundam fans. The café features a unique and original menu inspired by the Gundam series. The staff are also beautifully dressed as your favorite Gundam characters.

Maid cafés

Maid cafés are places where you can dine while being served by young and cute ladies dressed in lovely maid outfits. Maid cafés are scattered all around Akihabara. It is also not unusual if you pass by some maids calling out for customers while you stroll the streets.

Tokyo Anime Center

The Tokyo Anime Center is located in Akihabara Crossfield. The place exhibits a display of anime and game-related merchandise. Live concerts, host events, and launching fairs are also regularly held in the Tokyo Anime Center. Of course, an official shop filled with anime merchandise is also available.

Akihabara Gamers

The head branch of the Gamers store in Akihabara sells not only merchandise of anime and game characters, but also a wide variety of anime, manga, and game CDs, DVDs, magazines, and books, which makes it a perfect destination for enthusiasts.

Super Potato

If retro gaming is your style, then Super Potato is the place to go. Super Potato is probably the most famous game shop in the area. It features several floors of pure gaming fancy, with the top floor as a gaming arcade.

Toranoana

Toranoana, similar to Mandarake and Animate, is yet another heaven for anime lovers. A wide array of merchandise and books can be bought from this store. Doujinshi or fanmade comics are also sold here.

Akihabara has more in store for you

Akihabara, despite becoming famous into the anime subculture, still preserves its nature of being a center for electronics and gadgets up till now. In fact, a lot of the prominent establishments in Akihabara including famous electronics stores such as Yodobashi Camera, Sofmap, and Yamada Denki are frequented by locals and foreign tourists alike.

Japan

I live in Yokohama, Kanagawa prefecture. I have a license to teach in high schools and was admitted to the degree of Master of Arts in Teaching English as a Second Language in the University of Birmingham. Until 2015 I had been teaching English at public high schools in Kanagawa for 37 years. During that time, I had some experience of guiding students from overseas through sister-school relationship around Tokyo and Kanagawa. Therefore, I had good command of English with the TOEIC score of 935. As for a tour guide experience I earned the certificate of National Government Licensed Guide-Interpreter in English and since then I have guided tourists to the popular sites around Tokyo, Yokohama, Kamakura and Yokosuka. My guiding focuses on introducing not only Japanese historical and cultural backgrounds but also giving tourists some tips to travel Japan only by themselves, such as how to use trains and subways, find good restaurants, reserve tickets, buy survenier, and speak basic Japanese. In addition, my tour includes opportunities to experience Japanese culture like Zen meditation, ninja performance, visiting anime's location sites based on tourists' request. Besides, by means of my hobbies of writing English Haiku and Waka (traditional Japanese poems) and performing Rakugo (traditional Japanese funny story telling) in English, I can surely entertain tourists during the tour. My moto as a tour guide is let the tourists have a once-in-a-lifetime experience in Japan with my profound, intelligible and interestiog guiding.

Japan

Hi! Welcome to Japan. My name is Shoji Kitamura, a licensed English-speaking tour guide. Please call me Shoji that is the same sound as a sliding screen made of wood and paper you may have seen in a traditional Japanese room. I was born and raised in Yokohama next to Tokyo but lived for work in several beautiful and historical cities such as Nikko, Hiroshima, and Ise which have world heritage sites and/or national park. I fully enjoyed the nature, culture and lives in each city where I lived. I retired after 36 years with a national research institute of fisheries in 2016. During my career, I visited 5 continents except Antarctica, more than 20 nations for attending international scientific conferences, conducting collaborative research or teaching some technologies, etc. In Japan, I often took foreign scientists and government officers sightseeing. I had great times in these opportunities. Such experiences made me decide to become a licensed English-speaking guide interpreter after retirement to introduce Japanese nature, culture, foods, etc. properly to many tourists coming to Japan from all over the world. For more than 20 years I’ve been living in Nikko, which is located about 150km north of Tokyo, and designated as a World Heritage site and a National Park. If you consider a day trip from Tokyo, I strongly recommend coming to Nikko by 2-hour train ride from Tokyo. I am looking forward to showing you around in this historical and beautiful town. Besides Nikko, I can also guide you in Yokohama, my home town, and in neighboring city such as Tokyo and Kamakura.
