TripAdvisor Japan, a travel website with helpful reviews, made a ranking of the top 30 "tourist destinations in Japan in 2014". This list was created using TripAdvisor Japan’s unique algorism to analyze the reviews written in languages other than Japanese, from April 2013 'til March 2014.
In 1st place was Fushimi Inari-taisha in Kyoto, last year's 2nd place. In 2nd place was the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum in Hiroshima, which was last year's 1st place. In 3rd place was Itsukushima Shirine also in Hiroshima, which was in 4th place last year. In 4th place was last year's 5th, the Kinkaku-ji Temple in Kyoto. An in 5th place, down from last year's 3rd place, was Todai-ji Temple in Nara. As you can see, the top destinations are almost all in Kyoto and Hiroshima.

I've been to Kyoto several times but this was my first time to Fushimi Inari Shrine. It was absolutely gorgeous. The red Toriis all the way to the top were a fantastic sight. We took so many pictures. the walk is fairly easy at first, and gets a little more rigorous. I'm not in great shape but was able to do this one! Very worth the effort. (Kim B, USA)
2. Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum / Hiroshima City, Hiroshima

3. Itsukushima Shrine / Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima
The shrine is situated on Itsukushima or “miyajima”. It is known for its unique Heian period architectural beauty, using the ocean as part of the premises of the shrine. It is registered as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.

The red gate is one of the icons of Japan and a must-see! Not only is there so much history here, but there surroundings are breath-taking, with the lake, mountains and wildlife. I suggest hanging around to late afternoon (explore other parts of the island in your free time), when the colours blend together and the red gate becomes even more beautiful. I cannot recommend this place enough, definitely one of the places that I wouldn't hesitate to go back! (elle_g11, Australia)
4. Kinkaku-ji Temple / Kyoto City, Kyoto
A temple situated in Kyoto. It’s formal name is Rokuon-ji, but since it is famous for it’s golden reliquary hall, it is more commonly known as Kinkaku-ji or the “golden temple”

There is no ambiguity in the name. The temple is definitely gold, strikingly so. The sound of it made me wary that the site would be overly garish, but it wasn't at all. It was beautiful. We got some of our best pictures with the temple and its reflection in the water. (Mike A, Hong Kong)

The biggest Buda in the world is here. So it's a must ! I did love Nara a lot. İn Nara this temple and the budist temple with the 1000 lanterns are fascinating.We thought half a day is enough for Nara, but it was so beautiful we nearly spent a hole day there. (thedeer, Turcky )
