Saruiwa “Monkey Rock,”

Saruiwa, or “Monkey Rock,” is one of Iki Island’s most iconic natural landmarks. This 45-meter-high basalt cliff was shaped by centuries of wind and waves, creating a silhouette that remarkably resembles a monkey looking out to sea. Set against the deep blue ocean, it offers dramatic coastal scenery and is a favorite photo spot, especially at sunset when the rock glows in warm light.

Oni no Ashiato “Ogre’s Footprint”

Oni no Ashiato, literally “Ogre’s Footprint,” is a striking natural coastal formation on Iki Island named for its shape, which local legend says was made by a giant demon planting his feet to save a stranded whale. This large, rough-edged hole in the rock has a circumference of about 110 meters and was formed over many years by the erosion of waves and wind along the shoreline. When viewed from above or the cliff edge, the hollow curve and surrounding rock resemble the imprint of a massive footprint, inspiring its dramatic name. According to local tales, two such footprints exist because the demon once straddled the island; the other is said to be on nearby Tatsunoshima. The site offers panoramic ocean views and fascinating rock textures, making it a memorable stop for visitors exploring Iki’s rugged coastal landscapes.

Estimated stay time: 30 minutes

Estimated travel time to next location: 15 minutes

Exploring around Gonoura Fishing Port

Take a relaxed stroll around Gonoura Fishing Port and experience the everyday life of Iki’s coastal town. Watch squid and tuna fishing boats coming and going, bringing in the day’s fresh catch. Small local shops nearby offer souvenirs and regional specialties, including Iki’s famous barley shochu. It’s a pleasant walk where you can enjoy the authentic atmosphere of the harbor and discover the island’s maritime culture up close.

Farewell time: Your Hotel in Fukuoka City

Please share your memories of this tour.

Alternative option to the sightseeing cruise: Kojima Shrine or Sakyo-bana

Kojima Shrine is a small, sacred island shrine connected to the mainland by a sandy path that appears at low tide. Often called “Iki’s Mont Saint-Michel,” visitors can walk across the sea to reach the torii gate and quiet forested grounds. Surrounded by clear water and coastal views, it offers a peaceful and mystical atmosphere unique to this island.

Sakyo-bana is one of Iki Island’s most dramatic coastal viewpoints, featuring wide grasslands that suddenly drop into towering basalt cliffs above the sea. From the cape, you can enjoy sweeping ocean panoramas and feel the refreshing sea breeze. The rugged scenery and open sky create a powerful yet peaceful atmosphere unique to Iki’s wild coastline.

About Tour Guide Katsu N.

Hi, I’m glad you found my page!

I’m a local guide based in Kyushu who loves sharing the region’s history, food, and landscapes in a relaxed and friendly way. Think of me as someone who can make your trip comfortable and memorable, while keeping things easygoing and fun.

I began guiding to share the history, scenery, and food of my home with visitors from around the world. Before this, I worked in luxury retail, where I learned how important details and genuine hospitality are. Now I bring that same spirit to my tours, making sure every guest feels comfortable, cared for, and free to enjoy their journey.

I specialize in private car tours around Kyushu, so you don’t have to worry about train schedules or carrying luggage. We can stop where you like, take things at your own pace, and enjoy the scenery along the way. Onboard you’ll have free Wi-Fi, music, and a comfortable ride—perfect for families, couples, or friends who want both convenience and a touch of luxury.

Some of my favorite places to share are:

Nagasaki: Peace Park, Atomic Bomb Museum, and the city’s cultural blend

Fukuoka: Dazaifu Shrine, city highlights, and Yanagawa’s river cruise with eel dishes

Kumamoto: Mt. Aso’s volcanic views, Kumamoto Castle, and Kurokawa Onsen

Oita: Hita’s riverside town, plus Beppu and Yufuin hot springs

Saga: Arita’s ceramics and the Yoshinogari ancient site

Takachiho Gorge: A mystical canyon tied to Japanese legends

What I enjoy most is helping guests discover both famous sights and hidden corners of Kyushu, while keeping the experience comfortable and stress-free. Whether you’re drawn to culture, food, history, or beautiful scenery, I can adjust the plan to match your style.

I’d love to share my part of Japan with you and create memories that last long after your trip. If you have any questions or requests, please feel free to send me a message. I look forward to welcoming you to Kyushu and showing you what makes this region so special!

Reviews

Professional and Caring

Katsuhisa was extremely professional and communicative throughout our trip. He kept us updated on weather conditions and checked in about preferences before our journey began. Despite our very ambitious itinerary - which includes about 6 hours of driving in a single day - Katsuhisa fulfilled all of our requests with a positive attitude and no complaints. We were also traveling with our 2-year-old, and Katsuhisa took extra care to ensure our little one was comfortable and happy. At the end of our trip, Katsuhisa even surprised us by buying a thoughtful adorable gift for our child. We truly appreciate how Katsuhisa made our trip extra special. Joining his tour was definitely the highlight of our time in Japan.

Thank you very much for your warm and kind review. I am truly grateful for your thoughtful words, and I am delighted to hear that you were satisfied with the tour.///Under Japanese road traffic regulations, child seats are required in private vehicles and rental cars, so I am glad that having one prepared was helpful during your trip.///I was also pleased to hear that your child was able to enjoy the tour comfortably. Traveling with a young child can involve many considerations, but I am happy that your family was able to enjoy the journey together in a relaxed and pleasant manner. I also have a family member who works as a childcare professional, and I benefit greatly from their advice in situations like these.///Kyushu Island still has many wonderful places to explore, and I would be very happy to welcome you again in the future.///Warm regards,///Katsuhisa

Exploring Kyushu off the beaten track

We were interested in the period between 1850 to 1900 during Japan modernization as well as exploring the beautiful Kyushu geography. Katsu did a lot of research to make sure we went to Hagi castle as well as some of the houses of the Samurai who helped in the revolution. He also made sure we had a great lunch within our dietary guidelines. We used translations on occasion to augment his English

Hi Jack and Jennifer,/// Thank you very much for posting the review. And regarding the language, my apologies for the light mistakes. /// Hagi and Taketa are not areas I usually cover, and since my major was geography, I did my best with the research. However, some of the historical terms did not fully stick in my head, so I may have caused some inconvenience. However, I believe there were no language issues in places like Mt. Aso and Takachiho, so I would appreciate your understanding. /// I will continue in my reply to the Nagasaki tour review.
