Okutama station is a laid-back type of train station, preserving some old Japanese structures. As we arrive, you will feel the ease and serenity of countryside feeling but take note that the area is still part of Tokyo.
At this point forward we are going to prepare all the things needed and what we have to use during the hike such as first aid kits, crampons, water, trail snacks, etc.
Here are the things or spots you should expect on the trail.
1. almost 200 steps of concrete stairs.
2. Atago shrine
3. Trailing inside a cedar forest.
4. Mini shrine on top of the mountain with 2 guardian statues.
5. A pile of hiker's stones.
Mount Nokogiriyama Peak has an elevation of 1107 meters above sea level. at this point, we will have a short 15-minute break before we head to Mount Otake. There are benches at the peak and the peak is surrounded by trees which gives shade to the hikers and comfort while eating the trail snacks.
Mount Otake Peak has an elevation of 1266 meters above sea level. The distance from Mount Nokogiriyama to Mount Otake will take about 2 hours depending on the pacing of the hikers. Expect the view of Mt Fuji, the Mountain range of Yamanashi on the west part, and the Pacific Ocean on the east part from the standpoint of Mount Otake.
At this point, we will have a lunch break eating our bento meal that we brought on our way. We will have a much longer rest at Mount Otake before we head down to Mount Mitake Shrine.
From the peak of Mt. Otake, We are going to descend going to Mitake Shrine. The course will be around 1 and a half hours or 2 hours depending on the pacing of the hikers. Along the way you are going to see hikers lodge, a small shrine and a small torii gate.
In the surroundings of Mitake shrine, you will see traditional Japanese Inns, souvenir shops, and some cafes in the area. There are 2 guardian deity in the temple and you will see a samurai riding on a horse. Mitake shrine is a subject of mountain worship for Japanese people.
At this point, we will ride the train going down from Mt. Mitake. The fare is 600 yen for 1 way ride. The train ride is approximately 10-15 minutes going down from the mountain.
From the Mitake Tozan Railway we will ride a bus going to Mitake Station. Bus ride is around 338 yen one way. At this time we will ride the train heading back to Shinjuku station. Approximately from Mitake station it will take almost 2 hours. There are express train that arrive in Mitake station going to Shinjuku but really limited.
Picture taking and parting ways. We can eat in the Tabehoudai restaurant in yoyogi but this is optional. I prefer to eat unlimited grilled meat right after a long tiring hike just to reward myself for the whole day of hiking. Tabehoudai grilled meat cost around 2500 yen.
