Kasama in Ibaragi Prefecture is one of the pottery towns where we can easily access from Tokyo. It takes about 1. 5 hours from Tokyo by express train and is the perfect place for a day excursion for nature and pottery lovers. Japanese pottery is very unique and you will be fascinated by not only the variety of tableware but also pottery art, as I did.
Check out what we are going to do.

At your hotel or JR Ueno station
Meet at your hotel or agreed meeting point. We'd like to catch the 9:30 train from Ueno to Tomobe, so I will arrange the meeting time according to the train time. (if we meet in west part of Tokyo, the meeting time may be earlier.)
If we meet at Ueno station, it would be just before the train departure time.
Take an express train to Tomobe station
The starting point of the journey to Kasama.
Take a loop bus or taxi from here to Kasama town.
Within the Kasama city, use loop bus or rent a bicycle.
While walking in the natural forest, you would find many pottery arts, like modern arts.
Also stop at a shop to look around various kinds of Kasama potteries.
The local shrine with the magnificent sculpture.
Enjoy lunch with Kasama pottery table ware.
The Japanese traditional house used to be an atelier of the prominent Japanese artist in early 20th century, Kitaoji Rosanjin.
Enjoy visiting some shops and galleries in the main roads of Kasama. You can buy them as souvenirs.
Back to Tomobe station and take 17:03 train to Tokyo.
Arrive at Ueno station.
JR Ueno Station
Kasama is a pottery town where you can easily access from Tokyo. If you are Japanese pottery lover, and also like to go out from Tokyo, off the beaten path, and love nature, it is the perfect place to visit.
I will take you to two of my favorite places, Tou no Mori, the natural forest with pottery arts, which is very picturesque, and the Japanese traditional house of the famous Japanese artist, Kitaoji Rosanji.
You can enjoy nature, art, tradition and modern in one day!
Hotel pick up at central Tokyo area.
Transportation fee for you and guide. (Ueno to Tomobe 3560yen/one way/person + loop bus or bicycle (within 1000 yen) or taxi (depends)
Lunch (around 2000 yen/person)
Entrance fee to the facilities. (Up to 1000 yen)
- Express train from Ueno to Tomobe takes 1 hours, and move to Kasama 30 mins, so we use about 3 hours to go and back. And there are only limited number of train, taking 9;30 train is the best.
- Tou no Mori is the natural forest and the route is up and down, also at or after rain, the route is quite slippy, so I recommend the walking shoes.
- Due to traffic condition, the schedule may change.
- I request you to take your own travel insurance (we may rent a bicycle)
Our Shibamata and Anime custom tour was marvelous. Sachimi made our tour delightful as we did not know our way around Tokyo. She was able to take us exactly to the places we requested, and went the extra mile in explaining every aspect of the trip in great detail. As a tour guide she is one of the best we have ever experienced and the cost of the 7 hour tour was well worth it. Sachimi was so detail-oriented and planned out everything for us so we did not have any stress. She had great ideas as to where to take us, such as the Jujutsu Kaisen Cafe in Harajuku. It was a wonderful experience and Sachimi was kind enough to modify the trip for us when necessary, like changing the drop-off point at the last minute. She was kind enough to escort us to the clinic where we needed to get our PCR test to return to L.A., and we are so grateful for her kindness. I encourage anyone to try her tours as they will not be disappointed. Thank you Sachimi!
Hi, William-san, Sachiko-san, and Kana-chan. Thank you very much for your kind review. I also had a very good time with you, enjoying the tour myself, especially after a long interval of hosting the guests from overseas. I am also very happy to see Sachiko-san enjoyed Shibamata so much, and Kana-chan enjoyed Ikebukuro and Harajuku shopping. I hope to meet all of you again after the COVID restrictions are lifted. By that time, I wish you all happiness and health. Thanks again and best regards, Sachimi
We went on an 8hr tour with 5 kids of all ages and everyone had a great time because Sachimi went overboard to make sure that the everyone's whim was catered for. What could have been a stressful experience turned out to be a wonderful, fun & culturally and historically educational tour. Make Sachimi your guide and you will have no worries.
Hi Adrian-san & family. Thank you very much for very warm review. It was lovely day to spend day with you at my favorite town, Kawagoe. I am so glad that everyone enjoyed the day, especially eating and shopping :) Please enjoy whole your stay in Japan for a month & lovely family get together. I wish to see you again in the future. best regards, sachimi
She was great for showing us places not rushed. I could take a time to photograph places as I wanted( I’m an amateur photographer). My family (3) enjoyed her guided tour.
Hi, Nancy-san Thank you very much for your kind review. It was really nice meeting you all and I am happy you enjoyed the tour with me. Also I feel great that you could take photo as much as you like and hope you have many great photos of the day. Please enjoy all your stay in Tokyo and Kyoto! Also please come back to Japan again! Thank you and have a nice trip. best regards sachimi
Sachimi was so lovely and taught us a great deal about Japanese culture. She showed us around Kyoto for the day and chose a wonderful restaurant for lunch. We would absolutely recommend her. We would definitely use her again as our guide.
