At your hotel in Osaka
1st day: To start from Osaka station by Van service and move to Mt.Koya.
To walk around Mt.Koya Buddhism religion city.
The Buddhism religious city on Mt.Koya is 3km in the east-west direction and 2km in the north-south direction.
About 2300 people has lived there and about 600 priests within them has continued to pray and preserve this sacred place.
Lunch in the city
To see Daimon-gate, Danjo Garan/ Konpon daito, Kongobuji Temple, Kondo Hall and so-on.
After walking up through the path toward Mt. Koya, at first, you will find Daimon-gate which is the entrance of Mt.Koya religious city.
This gate is one of the largest temple gate in Japan and Kongo Rikishi statues are set on both sides of this gate.
Danjo-Garan is the area where there are 19 temple buildings located on one step higher land than that of Daimon-gate and it is the center of Shingon Esoteric sect training hall.
After a big fire in 1843, this gate was re-bult in 2015 and the Four Devas statues are set on both sides of the gate.
This hall is the main hall of Mt.Koya and important Buddhism ceremonies are held here.
The wife of retired emperor Toba copied 5000 numbers of Buddhism scripture to hold a memorial service for his husband and
Stored them in this hall. If you walk around the hall once by pushing the stick attached on lower side, then it is said that you already chanted all the Buddhism sutra.
Saito-two stories pagoda:
This two stories pagoda named “Tahotou” has become the pair with Konpon-Daito and built in 1834.
The divine sprit of Kukai which his pupil described is deified in this temple hall.
There has been lots of fires occurred in this temple. At present, a powerful sprinkler is set around this hall to protect this hall just in case a fire occur.
Konpon Daito (large pagoda, the root of the universe):
Konpon Daito is the first two-stories pagoda built in Japan as the central training center of Shingon Esoteric Buddhism.
In this pagoda, Mandala of the two Realms which represents the description of Kukai’s thinking as figure consisting of Womb Realm and Diamond Realm is enshrined. Also, Dainichi Buddha (Bliss body of the historical Gautama Buddha) and four Buddhism statues which combine the world are enshrined.
To walk and see through the path toward Okunoin Gobyo such as Ichinihashi bridge, Tombstones of the historical Samurai worriers and so-on.

Ajimi-Jizo (Tasting Jizo):
It is said that Kukai has been in meditative concentration up to now and in future and he is watching over people.
The meals for Kukai twice in a day has been continued to execute up to now by priests. The meals arecooked in Gokusho (daily offering hall) are transferred to Dragon lantern hall through the mausoleum bridge after these meals are offered to Ajimi-Jizo (Tasting Jizo).

Dragon lantern hall:
The temple space toward Mausoleum bridge is prohibited to take photos because this area is the sacred places Kukai religious faith.
This hall is to worship the mausoleum of Kukai. In this hall, the sacred light named “Kiezuno-Hi” which is offered by retired Emperor Shirakawa has been lightened up to now more than 1000 years with more than 20 thousand of votive lanterns.
This hall is prohibitted to take photos.
To move to Ryujin onsen/hot spring by Van service
2nd day: To start from Ryujin onsen/hot spring and move to Kumano Hongu Taisha shrine by Van service
To see Kumano Hongu Taisha shrine.
Kumano Hongu Taisha is the headquarter of all 3000 numbers of Kumano shrines and a crow named “Yata-garasu” which is the messengers of Gods is set in Haiden-hall (Hall of worship). This crow has become the symbol of Japan Football Association.
The Gods of Izanagi-no-Mikoto, Izanami-no-Mikoto and Susano-no-Mikoto are enshrined in from the first to the third shrine hall.
The God named Amaterasu-Oomikami who was the daughter of zanami-no-Mikoto and Izanagi-no-Mikoto is enshrined in the fourth shrine of this shrine.
To move to Oounabara (The former site of Kumano Hongu Taisha) by Van service and see there.
Twelve gods of Kumano Hongu Taisha used to be enshrined in this area. It is said that gods of Kumano at the first time had descent this place where three rivers of Kumano, Otonashi and Iwata joined together to create the sandbank.
Eight gods had been flew away due to the catastrophic flood occurred in 1889 and remaining four gods has been transferred to current shrine of Kumano Hongu Taisha.
To move to Tsuboyu (small bathtub for a single person) of Yunomine onsen/hot spring by Van service and see there.
This hot spring was found 1800 years ago and the spring source of temperature 92 degrees Celsius gashing out from the bottom of bathtub made by nature rocks. This hot spring is one of the components of World cultural Heritage registered as “Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range”. This Tsuboyu had been used to wash their bodies before worshippers visit Kumano.
You can take the bath as chartered one every 30 minutes.
Lunch near Yunomine onsen
To move to Kamikura shrine by Van service and see there.
Kamikura mountain is located in Shingu city of Wakayama prefecture by 15 minutes walking from Kumano Hayatama Taisha.
Kamikura shrine is located on half way up Kamikura mountain and this shrine is the Auxiliary shrine of Kumano Hayatama Taisha.
The 538 stone steps toward Kamikura shrine was made by Yoritomo Minamoto in 1193 who was the top Samurai worriers established Kamakura period (1192 – 1333). This stone steps was built up by unprocessed nature stones and very steep on some portions that has let this path as the most famous and tough Kodo (old path).
After climbing up these stone steps by using maximum physical strength and mental power, we found at first the Torii gate on the summit of the mountain with several big rocks on a giant monolith. This monolith is the sacred object of Kamikura shrine named “Gotobiki-Iwa” because this rock looks like toad. This sacred place is said to be the one where Gods deified in Kumano Sanzan for the first time had descend.
To move to Kumano Hayatama Taisha by Van service and see there.
Total twelves numbers of Gods including Izanagi-no-Mikoto, Izanami-no-Mikoto and Susano-no-Mikoto are enshrined in Kumano Hayatama Taisha.
To move to Nachi-Katsuura onsen/hot spring by Van service
3rd day: To start from Katsuura onsen and move to Daimonzaka by Van service
To walk up through Kumano Kodo/Daimonzaka and arrive at Kumano Nachi Taisha.
Daimonzaka is the path made by stone steps toward Kumano Nachi Taisha. After climbing up 467 stone steps of the path, you can reach Kumano Nachi Taisha. I felt that you can get much more benefit from the shrine by praying after you take much more effort to climb the long and steep steps.
To see Kumano Nachi Taisha.
Total twelves numbers of Gods including Izanagi-no-Mikoto, Izanami-no-Mikoto and Susano-no-Mikoto are enshrined in this shrine.
Also, the sacred object of this shrine is Nachi waterfall. Nachi fire festival is held every year on July 14th by twelves gods being transferred to 12 numbers of portable shrines whose shape look like waterfall of 6meter height and being purified by torches lined up on during through the path from Nachi Taisha to Nachi waterfall Nachi.
To see Nachisan Seigantoji temple.
It is said that the thatched hut in which Indian priest named “Rakei” enshrined Kannon statue is the origin of this temple.
This temple was burned out once and was re-built by Hideyoshi Toyotomi in 1590.
To walk down through Kumano Kodo and arrive at Nachi waterfall.
To see Nachi waterfall.
The waterfall with a fall of 133 meter and water quantity is the number one in Japan.
This waterfall had been shaped by a nature movement occurred about 15 million years ago.
This area was located on the boundary between hard granite and soft sedimentary rock. By soft sedimentary rock being vanished due to the erosion, only quay wall made of hard granite rock has remained due to the strong tolerance against erosion that has created Nachi waterfall.This fact means that Nachi waterfall has been created by combination of both nature miracle occurred 15 million years ago and the summit of Shinto religion where ancient gods dwell.
Lunch in Katsuura
To move to Hashikluiiwa/rocks by Van service and see there.
Enormous magma had appeared on underground and those magma had pushed up to the original sedimentary formations. Then, those magma had become the solid-state by being cooled and the igneous rocks had been created. It is considered that the sedimentary rock layer had been disappeared by the sea water erosion with only the igneous rock layer has been remained that has created Hashikui-iwa rocks.
To move to Sandanheki/stone wall by Van service and see there.
Sandan-heki is a big stone wall built up along by the beach by about 2km long and maximum 50 meter height. On 36 meter under the ground, the sea cliff has been created.
It is considered that the sedimentary rock layer had been disappeared by the sea water erosion with only the igneous rock layer has been remained that has created Sandan-heki.
To move to Senjyoujiki/stone carpet by Van service and see there.
Senjojiki is a matts made by white soft sands rocks.
This land layer is made by the rocks of interbedded sands and mud which had been accumulated 14 million years ago.
This landscape of Senjojiki has been created thanks to the erosion by raging waves washing the shore.

I organised this tour on behalf of a teenager who is fascinated with the Yamato battleship so this tour had to be very customised and Kashima-San lived up to the challenge!
