(2) Nijo-jo Castle (World Cultural Heritage Site) This castle was built in the early 17th century by the Tokugawa Shogunate government for the purpose of protecting the Kyoto Imperial Palace and as the accommodations when Tokugawa Shogun was in Kyoto. It was subsequently enlarged by successive Shogun. It is the castle as well as the palace, where you can see the powerful structures and beautiful gardens. You can learn, in addition, how great the power of Tokugawa Shogun was. (3) Kinkakuji temple (the Golden Pavilion) (World Cultural Heritage Site) The history of this temple began when the third Shogun of the Muromachi period acquired a tract of land in this area from a powerful statesman in 1397 and built a villa of his own to entertain the Emperor and members of the nobility. The upper two levels of the temple are covered with pieces of gold foil and are shining brilliantly against the background of the rich greenery. The pond in the foreground reflects the golden structure. It looks like the materialization of Pure Land of Buddha in this world. In addition, on the top of the golden structure is the shining phoenix.

Everywhere around the Great Buddha Hall, in the meantime, you can enjoy mixing with tame deer which do you no harm but ask you for food, "shika-sembei", which is being sold at the nearby stalls for 150 yen a pack containing some 50 grams of the deer food. You will feel very happy feeding, stroking and hugging the cute animal whose number exceeds, perhaps, 100. (Others) The transportation fare between Kyoto and Nara on a Kintetsu train is 620 yen (plus 510 yen if you take a limited express train). The entrance fee to Todaiji temple is 600 yen.

We will take a direct express train from Shinjuku in Tokyo to Lake Kawaguchi to avoid the traffic jam by a highway bus. The possibility of viewing Mt. Fuji is shown in the photo. If we can't see the mountain, I would recommend Oshino Hakkai and Aokigawara forest in the following general itinerary.

“Brilliant Tour Guide”

Tomoko is a brilliant tour guide. She is full of useful information, anecdotes and stories that are so interesting. She went out of her way to accommodate our requirements. My wife was unable to walk great distances due to blisters. Tomoko was able to restructure our tour so we were able to see the Tokyo sights on bikes, That was a great experience.

Thank you for the lovely review, Greg. To be honest, when the subject of cycling came up the day before I wondered what I would do, but now I am grateful for the way you have broadened my horizon. Unlike Nara, Tokyo is much larger and has more traffic, so we enjoyed riding very carefully together. The lunch we had after returning our bicycles at Otemachi, with our stomachs suddenly felt empty released from the tension, and the beer we toasted was delicious! The good times we had together laughing and talking a lot are my treasure. Thank you, Greg and Jan.
