(Highlights) The present castle building looks beautiful, powerful and in perfect harmony with the surrounding environment. However, it was the venue of hegemony, bloody conflicts and natural disasters for many centuries. Once you visit the castle, you will be amazed at the magnificent structures, huge moats and the beautiful natural environment. The view from the top of the eight-storied donjon is splendid. You can reach there either by going up the steep stairways or taking an elevator ride. The castle is in the heart and the landmark of Osaka city, where many modern buildings stand. (How to enjoy) You can enjoy a leisurely walk along the one-kilometer road leading to the castle after you get off the train and, once inside the precincts, you cannot spare even a moment without marveling at the sight of an ancient technology and human wisdom, as well as the huge rocks building up the protection walls. Not only seeing the buildings, you can also sit on the grass and enjoy having lunch with your family members or friends. (Others) The entrance fee is 600 yen per person and the JR Osaka Loop Line train fare is 300 yen for the ride from Osaka to Osaka-jo-koen station. The fare for the ride between Kyoto and Osaka, meanwhile, is 510 yen.

Dozens of rafts full of invited, kimono-clad people towed by small boats go upstream the major river in the heart of Osaka, while on-lookers watch from the river bank, nearby bridges and the pier. There stand stalls selling varieties of food, filling in every nook and corner of the river bank. Thousands of fireworks are shot up into the night sky to the great enjoyment of visitors. (Origin of the festival) The myth says that in the year 951, two years after God descended from heaven and settled in the Tenmangu Shrine, they flowed a sacred float in the river from the nearby beach and a funeral hall was built and "misogi" purification ceremony held at the shore where the float reached. Then, those living near the shrine and worshipers built a ship to contributed to the shrine. (How to enjoy) You can see rafts full of "yukata"-clad people in the festive mood on board slowly going upstream the river, while being soaked in the cool evening atmosphere. After dark, fireworks setting the skies ablaze make you sigh in joyful excitement. You can have whatever food you like at the stalls built in the riverbank. (Transportation) The JR train fare from Kyoto station to Osaka station is 560 yen and the subway fare, 180 yen. (Others) Since the venue is very crowded, please do your utmost in protecting yourself from being bumped by others and from theft. If you are there on the days other than the festival day, you can enjoy cruising on board a sightseeing ship called "Osaka water-bus" for a fee of 1,700 yen for one-hour ride. The Abeno and the Ten-noji area is the commercial center and transportation hub of Southern Osaka. Abeno Harukas has an observatory deck on the 59th and 60th floor, "Tenku Teien" or Sky Garden on the 58th floor and an observatory restaurant on the 57th floor. The Osaka Marriott Miyako Hotel is on the 19th, the 20th floor, and also from the 38th to the 55th floor. Offices are on the 21st to the 37th floor. There's a museum on the 16th floor and the Kintetsu Department Store covers everything from the 14th floor down to the B2 level. In particular, the 360 degree panoramic view of Osaka city from the top floor is a picturesque night scene because there aren't any high buildings around the ABENO HARUKAS. Inside the Kintetsu Department Store you will find many luxury brand boutiques, shops and restaurants. I'm sure you'll enjoy shopping and eating there. The Sumiyoshi Grand Shrine was founded in 211 and is dedicated to the sea gods which are the Sumiyoshi Sanjin (Sumiyoshi three gods) and the Empress Jingu. It's the headquarters of the approximately 2,300 Sumiyoshi shrines nationwide. About 2.35 million people visited the shrine during the first three days of the New Year in 2013. Then we'll move to Sakai-higashi Station by train. You can see a panoramic view of Osaka city including Abeno Harukas.

Osaka Off the Guidebook: A Hidden Gem Even Locals Recommend!

“Very authentic local experience in Osaka!”

The tour felt very friendly and I got to talk with a lot of local people in a hole-in-the-wall restaurant that had the best food I've had in Osaka. Leo speaks perfect English and helped translate while I talked and made friends with other people. He even helped explain the menu to me and change my order to non-seafood when I was too shy to ask! He knew the area really well and showed me around some popular stores and places, but the whole time he made me feel super at-home. It was the most authentic experience I had so far, way better than the crowded places downtown. For any English speakers who want to experience real Osaka instead of the popular tourist traps, I highly recommend this tour with Leo!

Osaka Beginner`s Tour

“A great day with a great guide”

Kaori has excellent English, she is scholar and has a wide and deep knowledge. She was very flexible and changed the program to our request very wisely. There was no one question we didn’t get answer . And not less important Kaori is very nice, kind and a person you like to spend time with. When we arrived to Osaka we thought there is nothing to see but Kaori proved us We’re absolutely wrong. No doubt she enriched our visit in Okasa.
