Kamakura, one hour from Tokyo station, thirty minutes from Yokohama, is the town where first Samurai capital flourished between 1185 and 1333. Under the feudal government populist Buddhism and Zen sect was spread. Many temples were built and various Buddha statues were crafted.
This one day trip takes you temples, shrine on your foot. The course includes one hour Ten-en hiking trail. Kamakura is surrounded by hills and full of green. The views from the trail are really gorgeous. Also, you can enjoy visits to Japan’s oldest Zen temple, Bamboo Temple and famous Shinto shrine.
Kencho-ji Temple is oldest Zen monastery in Japan and is still active today. Beside the central Butsuden (Budda Hall), the temple has a bell cast in 1252 designated as a national treasure and the juniper grove aged 760 years old.
Hokoku-ji Temple or Bamboo Temple is a Zen temple established in 1334. Moso bamboo grows in the temple and forms a serene garden.
Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gu is most famous shrine of first Samurai capital. Minamoto Yoritomo, the first Shogun who ruled Japan in place of emperor, ordered its construction in 1191 and designed central promenade that lead to the coast.

Ryuta was an excellent travel companion! He was very flexible about accommodating last-minute changes to our itinerary, always had interesting historical background and other facts about the places we visited to share with us, and was indispensable when it came to translating and helping us navigate around. Would definitely recommend his services.
