Tokyo is a jazz lover's paradise and is truly blessed with a large number of good joints, from intimate underground spots to historic venues. As a jazz fan, I love exploring the city's live jazz clubs and unique jazz kissas (cafés). Live jazz clubs are fantastic - there's nothing quite like the excitement of a performance unfolding in real time, with the energy shared between the musicians and the audience. I believe live jazz is at its best when it's close, warm, and communal - which is why I'm particularly fond of the smaller, more intimate clubs favored by talented local and visiting musicians. Jazz kissas offer a very different, yet equally captivating experience - they are relaxed spaces to enjoy carefully selected vinyl played on high-quality systems, and sometimes learn from a passionate owner about all things jazz through conversation. Many kissas are also known for their Nel drip coffee - a slow, hand-poured method using a cotton cloth filter, a Japanese favorite rarely seen elsewhere. On my tours, we can explore a jazz-rich neighborhood such as Kichijoji or Shimokitazawa, join a local jam session (if you're a musician), or do a 'jazz kissa crawl', visiting two or three kissas in one evening to experience their different expressions. “Megacity day tour with Dai”
The thought of exploring Tokyo seemed quite daunting to my family and I. So, I decided to hire a local to help us. We had the pleasure of discovering Tokyo with our guide, Dai, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. Dai was incredibly knowledgeable and shared fascinating insights about the city’s history, culture, and hidden gems. Our tour included iconic spots like Shibuya Crossing, where Dai brought the energy and stories of the world’s busiest intersection to life, as well as Akihabara, where he explained the unique subcultures and guided us through the vibrant streets. What made the day so special was Dai’s warm personality and his ability to make the experience both fun and informative. He tailored the pace perfectly, answered all our questions, and gave us recommendations we wouldn’t have discovered on our own. “Two Day Tokyo Toor”
Ritsuko was wonderful. She guided me and my 19 yo son on our first two days in Tokyo. On day 1 we focused on eastern Tokyo. She picked us up at our hotel in Ginza and we started our morning at Tsukiji market, then Asakusa to the temple, Ueno to the museum and to get out of the heat, Akihabara for all things anime and then back to Ginza. We covered a lot of ground. On day 2 we took it a bit easier and spent some time at the Meiji shrine, then explored Shibuya - Takeshita street, Omotesando, did the scramble to get shots in for my son and ended the day at Shibuya Sky. I had generally given Ritsuko the things we were interested in and she catered our tour to our “to do list”. She had local insight at each location and I absolutely appreciated that I didn’t have to think about which train to go on or where to transfer. We were her 2 ducklings following her on 2 very hot days and it was the perfect and most efficient way to get introduced to Tokyo. I’d use Ritsuko again without hesitation.

“No one better for Tokyo’s hidden gems”
Our three-generation family had an absolutely fantastic experience at Tsujiki Outer Market with our guide, Yumi-san. Her deep knowledge of the market's history and iconic details truly brought the area to life for us. She was incredibly thoughtful, helping us navigate the bustling crowds, managing the different paces of our group, and pointing out hidden gems we would have missed on our own. Thanks to her guidance, we were able to find some of the most delicious food and get an authentic taste of the market's vibrant atmosphere. Yumi-san even helped us find garbage bins (which any seasoned traveller in Japan knows can be challenging). Yumi-san is in our photo album.. We highly recommend her to any family looking for an unforgettable tour.
